WARNING: We do not recommend eating these together, but next time you’re in NYC, be sure to try one of the foodies listed below.  In the meantime, check out their websites. Do you think doughnuts will be the new “cupakes”?

Taquerias September 15, 2010

Filed under: Local Flavor — Deb Johns @ 2:25 pm

Taqueria is the Spanish word for taco shop and used to refer to restaurants specializing in burritos. The burrito craze is stronger than ever with national chains like Chipotle popping up all over town. We still love the neighborhood feel of taquerias like Pinche Taqueria in NYC and Taqueria Nacional and Taqueria Distrito Federal in DC.

French Fries September 14, 2010

Filed under: Local Flavor — Deb Johns @ 3:13 pm

For some restaurants that have mastered the art of french fry making, try Pommes Frites in the East Village (NYC), Et Voila  in DC, and Bobby’s Burger Palace in West Philadelphia.

For parties, we love how Pommes Frites serves their fries in paper cones. Try this at home for yourself! Pommes Frites even sells them on their website here.

Sandwich and Sub Shops September 13, 2010

Filed under: Local Flavor — Deb Johns @ 2:30 pm

The originators of the sandwich include places likes Carnegie Deli,  Katz’s Deli, and Russ and Daughters in New York City.  The sandwich craze has been revamped with the rise of sandwich specialists in DC and NYC. . In NYC, try Wich Craft started by Tom Collicchio, head chef of Bravo’s Top Chef, and No. 7 Sub in the Ace Hotel. DELICIOUS.

For Washingtonians, check out Taylor Gourmet  and Jetties. Taylor Gourmet is noted for its Philadelphia roots and Italian market; the bread is shipped fresh from Sarcone’s, Philadelphia’s premier breadmaker, and the sandwiches are all named after streets in Philadelphia. Jetties gives off more of a beachy and family-friendly vibe. The sandwiches are named for the beaches on Nantucket, and ice cream always follows!

PB & J’s and Smoothies September 10, 2010

Filed under: Local Flavor — Deb Johns @ 2:35 pm

The Peanut Butter and Co. a specialty peanut butter and jelly shop opened in 1998 in SoHo as the ‘heart and soul’ of the all natural peanut butter manufacturer.  They’ve even published a cook book with peanut butter and jelly specialties that can be bought on Amazon.

Once you’re done with your PB & J, you’re sure to be thirsty from peanut butter overload. Make sure to stop by our other favorite specialist in town, Liquiteria, a juice bar, to quench your thirst.  You will find smoothies ranging from pressed juices to liquid meals!

Macaroni and Cheese September 9, 2010

Filed under: Local Flavor — Deb Johns @ 12:57 pm

Fall inspires us to clean out our closets, organize our basics, and get ready to layer it on for the cool weather. Speaking of layering on, this week into next week, we are going to highlight some of our favorite food specialists (which we think is a growing category)  from various cities.

Today’s specialists, S’MAC and Macbar hail from NYC and cater to Mac and Cheese lovers. S’MAC is in the East Village and serves anything from buffalo to vegan macaroni and cheese choices. The store is painted orange and has a strong cult following.

Macbarin Soho, has takeout containers that even look like a macaroni noodle.  Check out the one of a kind sneakers Vans created for Mac Bar employees. Pretty cool!
