We’re told that once they had made their purchases,

“they came down off the stage to the packaging tables where, to their surprise, they received the adorable Scout bags generously donated again this year by Deb and Ben Johns at Bungalow”.

                This year’s Mother’s Day Shop was another great success and one more reason why the Bungalow team loves helping out where we can in the DC community. The ‘grassroots’ level charities we have worked with and will continue to work with are perfect indicators of the ‘generous’ lifestyle we are always promoting. Our consumers and retailers no doubt have busy and fast-paced lives through which they carry their SCOUT bags and bins, so to own a bag that in turn helps one of our DC neighbors is a purchase of which the SCOUT fans can be very proud. GOOD-FOR-YOU SUNCARE:

From UVA to UVB rays, from SPF to broad spectrum, we’re breaking it all down for you here, courtesy of the Skin Cancer Foundation‘s handy online guide.

-Kiehl’s is known for making no-fuss, not overly perfumed skincare, so what better company to use than one which has its roots grounded in good sense and plenty of SPF? We are loving their Super Fluid SPF 50 UV Defense for day, and then at night use the Line-Reducing Concentrate! Don’t forget that Kiehl’s makes a fab lip balm as well, its SPF 15 Lip Balm which you can purchase either with or without a hint of sheer color. Basic, easy-going and reasonably priced – just a few of the reasons we are Kiehl’s skincare fans!

-Clarins is a classic skincare brand perhaps better known today for top-notch hues of liquid tanning lotion, but lately we’re loving it’s sun protectors, namely the SPF 50 duo of Sunscreen and Sunscreen Spray. The best part about Clarins is that, outside of the drugstore realm, most of the running line can be found at your nearest department store!

-We couldn’t bring you unbeatable skincare without sharing our latest favorites from funny and well-established brand Bliss - from your 20s to your 90s, good skincare starts with effective lotion, so we recommend Bliss’s Youth as We Know It Anti-Aging Cream in SPF 30 (for the less-genetically-blessed who need a bit more T.L.C.), as well as the Fabulous Face Lotion in SPF 15 (for the genetically-blessed who just need a little ‘maintenance’).

-Similar to Kiehl’s in the no-fuss and reasonably priced lineup are options from Dermalogica and Mario Badescu - Dermalogica makes face lotion for the ‘Ultra-Sensitive’, and Mario Badescu makes Aloe Moisturizer… stock up on both of these if you are prone to breakouts, if nix the dyes and perfumes or you just require the face lotion-equivalent of petting a soft puppy (read: gentle skincare that simply protects your face, nothing more and nothing less).

-Malin & Goetz is a favorite of ours not only for the colorful packaging but especially for the range of lotions and creams to suit your skin – wear their SPF 15 Facial Moisturizer by day, then apply their Replenishing Face Cream for a nighttime detox that puts the good nutrients back into your skin.

-Last but not least, our latest obsession is Dr. T’s Supergoop! products, specifically his Save Face and Sunscreen Swipes – both have extra UV protection to shield you from the stronger rays, and who doesn’t love a towlette to have on-hand for SPF reapplication emergencies?

It goes without saying that we are not the skincare ‘experts’ – we leave that job to the Skin Cancer Foundation, as noted above. Educate yourself product-wise with Deb’s favorite brands above, and be sure to read up on the latest UV news on the web here!

-Bolinas, CA: fly into San Francisco and Bolinas is 30 mi north; stay at the Inn Above Tide, about 10 mi east of Bolinas in Marin County; for a midday snack or light meal stop into the Lunch Box in Stinson Beach; for a delicious evening meal try the Barefoot Café in Fairfax; for the indoor crew, don’t miss the Bolinas Museum, with attractive exhibits as well as a history of the city; for the outdoorsy crew, take the Palomarin Trailhead to Alamere Falls, which deposits fresh water into the Pacific Ocean (a sight to see!).
